One wonders about the source material - was this gentleman thawing his frozen gutters with a teakettle? Was he watering illicit plants in his roof-mounted grow-trough? What is going on here?
Heh, fair question. It was an article about bending wood. This photo was showing how you could use your rain gutter as a trough to soak some wood in boiling water, and then cover it with blankets to hold in the heat. It looked like he was making gutter tea. If you've ever cleaned your own gutters and smelled the smell of the crap you scoop out of there, the idea of gutter tea becomes mildly funny. From there, a hillbilly rooftop tea party practically creates itself.
Hah! try that with any wood with semi-decent tannin content (oak, walnut, cherry, for instance), and any spot where the galvanized layer is compromised will leach out some nice iron to stain your bent wood black. Though zinc will do it too, usually a bluish stain as I recall. Plastics have been such a blessing for folks like me who want to get their wood bent (nyuk nyuk!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=8&v=--iPQIwSEJM
Wowzers, Jim! Thanks for the super deep woodworking geekdom! Good to know! I always want to try bending wood, but have yet to work up the gumption to have a go.
Oh, if you want to give it a go the easy way, I have one word . . . one word, Phil: "wallpapersteamer". I highly encourage you to give it a try. The thinner the better, and stacking up several layers of thin, bending them, then gluing them up when they dry, is exponentially easier than trying to steam & bend one monstrous log.
