Gulfpride Oil - Your short woody.

Hey! Nice ad for.... "Gulfpride" oil? When did they drop the "pride"? The Google isn't easily forthcoming with the story on that. Maybe one of our Alert Readers has this information contained in-brain?

Nice rendering of the car. It still puzzles me why they so often use a painting for old ads instead of a nice simple photo. Anyway, the car's too long. Here, let me get that for you...

At first I was like, "that doesn't quite work . . . looks like it would fall on its butt." Then in a flash I was all like, "you just made room for a giant rear flywheel like in my old Smash-Up Derby VW Beetle": http://www.toysyouhad.com/Smash.htm

HAHAHAHAHA I had that! Even as a single-digit-year-old, I was horribly disappointed that the car just wobbled a long an a huge central flywheel. Of course, the other wheels were just props, meant to fly off in a crash. Fun toy! Thanks, Jim!

Although the painting doesn't make it completely evident, that woodie is a Packard wagon, c.1948-49. There was a restored example (in the same green) that made its appearance at the annual Newport (IN) Hiilclimb for several years -- or may still be showing up, though I haven't. This car was a great behemoth, stunning if for nothing more than its mass. (BTW, why is the driver's head sewn on backwards?)

Ah! Nope. That fella is a man leaning in the window to talk to the lady in the passenger seat. Probably asking the lady what she's doing with a guy who drives a wood paneled wagon.
